Colonel Carter M. Braxton

Was born in Norfolk, Va., but was raised in Fredericksburg. Soon after the outbreak of the Civil War (May 8, 1861) he was made Captain of the Fredericksburg Artillery Co., promoted to Major in April 1863 and on March 14th was made Lt. Col. of Artillery in the Confederate Army. He came here in the early days with the C. & O. and was district civil engineer for this division of the railroad, later becoming Chief Engineer. He contributed materially to the development of Newport News up to the time of his death in May 1898. He is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery.
